Greta Garbo was born in Stockholm on September 18yh, 1906. Her father died when she was fourteen, and after working in a barber's shop and as a hat model, she entered the Royal Dramatic School. In 1922 she began her screen career in her own country, her acting causing a sensation. Three years later Mauritz Stiller, the famous producer who had taken Greta Garbo under his wing, was given a Hollywood contract, and took her along with him. She is now regarded as one of the greatest actresses on the screen. Among her latest films is Queen Christina, with John Gilbert, who was her co-star in some of her greatest successes a few years ago.
