Dirty, guilty, and unrepentant, Lee Hunter and Jack Priest faced the Mexican firing squad. They hated each other so much that the only thing either of them minded about dying was that they were going to do it together. It was bone cold, and the sun just now rising - the last sun either one of them would see - would never warm them. The sweat they had worked up digging their own graves ran in icy rivulets. They smoked harsh Mexican cigarettes and waited. "Perhaps you would prefer not not die," the captain said softly. "There is a way this might be managed. If you would ride into the wild country to the south and recover the Treasure of the Lost Virgin, then perhaps you can live." Lee Hunter knew riding to the south was just a slower way to check out, but, given his choice, he found he didn't feel much like dying this morning.
